This brooch appeares on the cover of the second edition of the "Spratling Silver" book by Morrill and Berk. It is a rare example of Spratling's work -- big and beautiful -- made of sterling silver and bronze. In pre-Columbian cultures, the butterfly symbolized the souls of women who died in childbirth or warriors who d in fell battle. Hallmarked on the reverse with the conjoined WS and the lozenge shaped "Spratling silver" mark. This is an exceptional piece
